3 Social Media Promotion Mistakes to Avoid

by Daphne on June 18, 2010

Social media promotions help to breathe life into your marketing efforts, if you do them right. It will have the opposite effect if you make mistakes, which can drive people away.

Mistake #1: Don’t Announce Winners

The assumption that most people will draw when you don’t announce winners to your giveaways or contents is that there wasn’t one. They will conclude that it was all a scam and people will think that you cheated them just to get their email address or to get them to make a purchase. It doesn’t matter that you got so busy that you forgot to make an announcement, or that you posted it on your website but forgot to make the announcement on the same social media channels you used to announce the promotion. Get organized about your promotions, and write in your schedule when to make your announcement.

Mistake #2: Overdo It

You can overdo it when it comes to social media promotions. Unless your website primarily promotes contests and deals, you should limit the amount of promotions you do. Readers and fans will get bored and stop reading your announcements. They’ll classify it as spam and avoid your business like the plague.

Mistake #3: Use Only One Social Media Outlet

For social media marketing promotions to work you have to diversify the channels you use. Twitter should not be your sole focus. Use at least five different social media outlets for promotions in order to reach different people who may not visit some of the other social networking websites you’re targeting.

Every small business owner with a web presence has an online reputation, and making these social media promotions mistakes will help destroy it.

For sure, when such promotions aren’t made in the proper way, they can have a negative effect. Although I don’t have the intention of starting one anytime soon, the tips given here were useful. Thanks for sharing!

Good post, i think when it comes to social media promotion you have to use the right channels for your target demographic.

For example you will find different users on Twitter and Facebook than you will on StumbleUpon or Digg.

It is important that your reach the correct demographic for your social media promotions. Use free social media analytic tools like sociafyq to really gauge how successful your promotion is.

If you are looking for more information on specific demograhpic groups across social networking sites check out an article i wrote: http://www.socialmedianews.com.au/ultimate-social-media-demographic-statistics/

Kind Regards,
