Do Follow Blog Comments for Everyone

by bosmol on April 21, 2009

Changing your blog from nofollow to do follow can have a significant influence on the amount of traffic you receive. I recently switched my Blogger Account from NoFollow comments to Do follow comments.

Wordpress makes a widget you install to change the nofollow to follow. It is as easy as that.

It is easy to do from Blogger as well. Go to settings – layout – edit HTML. From here click “Expand Widget Template” and do a search (control +F) for “rel=’nofollow’”

Find the first instance and delete it. Completely delete the “rel=’nofollow’” to allow links posted in comments to have link juice.

To make sure this works you need to go to your settings. From here go to comments and go to the “Comment Form Placement” and make sure the embedded below post is selected. This will show the post and comments on the same page. When shown together the comments are dofollwo. If you leave the comments to a seperate page then they will be nofollow.

This will increase your readers and comments, but you have to be careful to make sure your spam guard is up and is being constantly moderated.

There are lots of lists that include dofollow blogs, making it easier to build traffic and increase user interaction.

Seems like a win-win situation to me. I hope more bloggers begin to turn off the “nofollow” tag and allow for link juice!

I don't run a blog (blogger) as such, it's a hand crafted site with a disucssion forum. I've actually been toying around with the idea of making user inserted links (www. http: etc.) live links instead of just text and I had been a bit worried about the SEO concequences hence I found this blog.

So.. I've decided to go for it. Let the link juice flow and we'll see what happens. My main worry was the spammy online viag*** nonsense that you often get on unmoderated forums.

I guess we'll see!

Letting users embed their links is always a good way to draw in traffic AND spammers. You must carefully moderate all links if you do allow for the link juice to flow! Happy link building

Thanks for the post on dofollow versus nofollow. I experienced the same with my blog. That is to say that once I changed from nofollow to dofollow, the number of comments increased substantially.

Hey thanks for the tip. I have a problem see next post! Can you help? Matt

7 Matt Dofollow Wannabe Blogger August 15, 2009 at 12:31 pm

I have followed your instructions to the 'T' and was simply able to remove rel='nofollow' tags from the relevant points in the Layout->Edit Html->Edit Template->Expand Widget Templates area.

However, as you will see, the links in comments are all still 'nofollow'. Here is the link to my blog:
Dispute annoying parking ticket blog

The second entry was my test post:

http://annoyingparkingticket.blogspot.com/2009/08/california-vehicle-code-cvc-div-11-cvc.html

You will see comments are all nofollow, even though I demonstrated in comment #6 that the template has rel='nofollow' removed. Note that '<>' were replaced by '[]' to push html through the comment form and publish it. Main thing, there is no nofollow in the template.

So I'm at a loss, and have no additional idea how to change my blogger into dofollow. I would really appreciate all replies pointing toward a solution. Thanks!

P.S.: Here is a link straight to comments. Please comment with your ideas:

9 Do Follow Blog August 24, 2009 at 5:19 am

DoFollow blogs attract a great number of spammers and that's why many blogs turn to nofollow every day,it's a pity.
I hope some day they will stop to spam and read the post and add some value with their comments, posting your links everywhere is not link building is a pathetic spam..

Cheers!

@ Matt:

I apprectiate you comment in my blog. Posts like yours help me realize I missed an important step that is causing you this problem.

To make sure this works you need to go to your settings menu. From here go to comments and go to the "Comment Form Placement" and make sure the embedded below post is selected. This will show the post and comments on the same page. When shown together the comments are dofollwo. If you leave the comments to a seperate page then they will be nofollow.

Now it is very difficult to find a really good blog, which is written the truth, not rumors. I really liked your blog and I completely share your thoughts at New Technology site.

To ensure that this work you must go to the Settings menu. From there, go to comments and go to the "Comment Form Placement" and make sure that the message included below is selected. This will bring up the post and comments on the same page. When shown and comments are dofollwo. If you leave comments on a separate page and they will be nofollow.

This looks like a really useful service and it’s free for blog owners. When choosing a domain name, you want to consider what keywords you want to optimise your site for and try and choose a domain name which is keyword rich so it helps with your Seo.

20 Vocab Builder November 19, 2009 at 2:42 am

But how do you ensure people who are coming are genuine? We have a blog http://www.vocabbuilder.net/blog but when we enabled dofollow, our traffic went 4 times. Most of these were fakes.

21 SEO Optimizers November 20, 2009 at 9:20 am

Vocab Builder- You can use a tracking tool such as Google Analytic. The problem with enabling the do follow is all the SPAM, which I have seen as relatively low. The new traffic may be from "Do Follow Directory" that have your URL listed a as place to post comments to receive link juice.

Thanks for information. By the way I don't agree that all are spammers who post in do follow blogs promoting their website. Yes, it gives traffic, but if it is a comment related to theme and website link is used just in name, I don't suppose it is a spam.

One thing is true that you will get lot of comments due to which your blog will be refreshed a lot and this helps in making a page perform better in search engines. So this way do follow is better BUT lot of spam will also happen which might hurt as you have make sure that you are not linking out to any bad website.

Commenting is a really good way to increase backlinks, however, some people tends to make spammy comments and there are soooo many of them! Sometimes it good to make lots comment, but we have to make quality comments too, not just “Me too” or “Interesting Blog” or “Interesting Article” Comments.

36 onsite computer support in Kolkata January 21, 2010 at 4:42 am

"do follow" is the opposite of "No Follow". wordpress blogs, by default, use the HTML nofollow attribute on links that poings away from the blog. This nofollow attribute comes into play with the posting of blog comments. the nofollow tag tells the search engines NOT to follow the link any other web sites.

Had a quick look at it very useful tool; and it proves the point I made do-follow-blog-list-revisted. There are better Search engines coming out that work sooo much better then a static list or rudimentary Search engine.

I am thinking about doing a kind of blog article directory. I have always wondered what the big deal was, when it comes to no-follow vs. do-follow. It looks really easy to change, and there seems to be som great advantages to do-follow.
